Paul R. “Chick” Herr, 94
January 6, 1928 - January 26, 2022
Paul Richard “Chick” Herr, of East Petersburg, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the age of 94. Paul was the last of five boys born to the late Jacob and Mary (Root) Herr. He and his brothers, Mark, Robert, Jake and Glenn, were raised on a small poultry farm and hatchery in Manheim. He attended Manheim Twp. High School, where he earned varsity letters in basketball, football, track and rifle. He played on the first ever Manheim Twp. Football team…think leather helmets, no face masks.
Chick was married to the late Thelma “Tootie” Alexander, his high school sweetheart for 72 years, and they had two sons, Jeffrey and Thomas. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Aaron, Jordan, Brock and Cassie, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Chick joined the Navy when he turned 18 during his Senior Year in High School, and proudly served in the submarine service aboard the U.S.S. Chub, SS-329 operating out of Pearl Harbor from where they patrolled in the Pacific Theatre and the Artic regions.
After his naval service, Chick attended and graduated from Millersville Teachers College with a degree in Industrial Arts. He then went into the homebuilding business for several years before landing a teaching job at Hempfield High School. He taught for 13 years before moving on to designing cabinetry and kitchens in the private sector. After retirement, he operated a picture framing business out of his home.
Chick had a great sense of humor and was always ready with a good joke. He enjoyed many years of golfing with buddies and deer hunting before back surgery put a stop to those activities. He was a long-time member of Lancaster Church of the Brethren and a past president of the East Petersburg Rotary Club.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

My condolences to Jeff and Tom and your families.
Paul “Chick” Herr was one of those rare people whom you were always happy to be around. He was quick witted, humorous, intelligent, thoughtful and always willing to help out. My day and outlook was always much brighter after talking with Chick. I am fortunate to have spent part of my life’s pathway with Paul Herr.

Good memories are mine in having Mr. Herr as my shop teacher in 1963 at Hempfield High School. He was very kind and patient, as he taught us various things about printing. My brother Gordon, also had Mr. Herr in 1960 as his shop teacher. It was at that time that Mr. Herr saw some interesting skills in my brother, and he encouraged Gordon to seriously consider learning more about printing and perhaps making the printing trade his careeer. Gordon took that counsel and worked at Donnelley Printing for 40 years. I followed my brother into printing, learning the trade and then was in printing sales, for a total of 48 years. The printing trade was very good to our families over many years. It all started with the encouragement and counsel of Mr. Herr and by faith, the providence of God. May the Lord Jesus truly comfort and give your family much peace during these difficult days and time to come. With my gratitude to your entire family. In Christ’s love, Don Landis

Marty and I send our condolences to the family of our friend Chick.
My fond memories include teaching his sons at the East Petersburg Elementary School, and Marty and I having fun at the Lyons Club Swimming Pool with their family, and playing bridge at Chick and Tootie’s home. We all lost a great citizen and friend.

I was so sorry to see the passing of your Dad and Granddad. I had the pleasure of calling on Krown Kitchens as a salesperson. Paul was always so kind and took the time with me no matter how busy. Just a very nice man! He always had a few minutes to talk about sports. I am sorry for your loss.
