Phyllis P. Rothermel, 89
November 16, 2024
Phyllis P. Rothermel, 89, of Lancaster, PA passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at her home with her loving children by her side. Originally from Adamstown, PA, Phyllis was born on September 24, 1935, to the late Luke and Grace (Trostle) Youndt.
She graduated from Wilson High School in West Lawn, PA.
Phyllis was known to be a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, friend, businesswoman, the “Keith Richards” of mothers-in-law by some, and overall, a force of nature. She loved being with her family, playing games and pinochle cards. In her later years, she became almost unbeatable in her favorite Mexican Train dominoes.
In addition to her matriarchal role in the family, she owned Quaker Hills Interiors in Lancaster, PA and The Pines Interiors in York, PA alongside her late husband Floyd Diehl. Later, she managed several resort motels in Brigantine, NJ and during this time was also a blackjack dealer at a casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Phyllis was a life-long gifted seamstress, creating custom-made draperies and upholstery for many homes and businesses. Her crochet, knit throws, and other pieces were treasured and cherished through the years by many.
She is survived by her children Susan Kauffman of Lancaster, PA, Christine Hall (Gregory) of Beaufort, NC, and Steven Diehl (Lisa) of Berwick, PA; grandchildren Ryan Hall, Alexander Hall, Byron Diehl, and Delilah Diehl; great-granddaughter Helena Hall; brothers Thomas Youndt and Michael Youndt; three step-grandchildren and their descendants; and nieces and a nephew. Her two cats Simone and (especially) Lola were loved and dear to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her brother Gary Youndt and her beloved husband George Rothermel.
Phyllis will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing, NJ, to be next to George forever. A celebration of her life will be planned for the family at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center (www.pspca.org/lancaster), Pet Pantry of Lancaster County (www.petpantrylc.org) or any other local animal shelters.
