Raymond C. Hargreaves, 78, died on Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Brethren Village. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Raymond T. and Eva Phillips Hargreaves.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annabelle (Leffelaar), and sons: Ray, husband of Cathy (McGowan) Hargreaves, MD, of Nashville, TN, Kevin Hargreaves of Wyomissing, PA, and Brian, husband of Mary Kay (Goffa) Hargreaves of Chantilly, VA; a sister, Ruthmarie Hargreaves of Teaneck, NJ, and five grandchildren: Nicholas, Emily, Evan, Connor, and Kyle Hargreaves. Ray was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Hargreaves.
Graduating from Bloomsburg University as Class President, he received a Master’s Degree from Montclair University and did extensive graduate work at the University of Scranton and Marywood University.
As a secondary classroom teacher for 36 years, in the Morris Hills Regional District, Denville, NJ, he also held the positions of Department Chair, District Supervisor, and Director of Continuing Education.
An avid reader and sports fan, he enjoyed traveling and crosswords. He was very proud of being an Eagle Scout and, also, of earning his tuition by playing sax and clarinet in various musical groups. A member of the Free & Accepted Masons, he was a Past Master. He participated in several church-related mission trips, and for the past six years served as a volunteer tax preparer with AARP-VITA.
He enjoyed choral singing, and participated in barbershop choruses while in New Jersey. For the past 13 years he was a member of the Highland Presbyterian Chancel Choir and, for the past several years, the Wesley Singers.
Memorial services will be held at 2PM on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at the Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601, with the Rev. Dr. Roger Rabey officiating. Family and friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church’s memorial garden. I just heard of Ray’ s passing today. As my next door neighbor, he was a role model for me as I grew up on South Webster Ave. I want to express my sympathy to Annabelle and the boys and their families as well as to Ruthmarie. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless you.

Dear Ray and Annabelle have been very special friends of ours for many years. We will miss his sense of humor and the fun times we had together as couples. Because Ray was a devout Christian, we know that God has wrapped His loving arms around him.
