Richard Bowers Smith, 89
June 08, 2014
Richard Bowers Smith, 89, of Landisville, “assumed room temperature” (as he often said) on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at a daughter’s home after a brief illness.
The widower of the late Ann (Linton) Smith, Mr. Smith was a native of Lancaster County, where he lived his entire life except for a few years during World War II and immediately after graduating from Franklin & Marshall College in 1948.
Called “Dick” by friends and family, Mr. Smith was retired from the Lancaster County Assessor’s Office. He previously worked for Federal Mogul. He was a seaman apprentice in the Navy.
Mr. Smith is survived by daughters Sylvia (wife of Susan Crim) of Alexandria,Va.; Suzanne Lausch (wife of David) of Akron; Mary Ann Purnell (wife of Lance) of Stowe, Vt.; and Nancy Day (wife of Bernie) of Lancaster; and a son, Ryk (husband of Patty), of York. He had 10 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Mr. Smith was predeceased by a sister Elizabeth Norman and brothers Thomas and James Smith.
A track star at McCaskey High School (Class of 1942), Mr. Smith enjoyed participating in and watching sports, particularly his grandchidren’s soccer, basketball, baseball and softball games. He won dozens of medals in the Lancaster County Senior Games during the past decade and regretted that his illness prevented his entry in this year’s competition.
Mr. Smith’s family will receive friends 9-10 AM, followed by a Time of Sharing at 10 AM, on Friday, June 13, 2014, at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 414 East King St., Lancaster, PA 17602. Private Interment with Military Honors will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125; or to the Community Supper Program at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville, PA 17538, where he is remembered for the deviled eggs he regularly brought for “his” table at the weekly gathering.
