Richard W. Meier, 86

Richard W. Meier, 86, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at Mennonite Home. Born in Crete, IL, he was the son of the late William T. and Emma Meier. He shared over 62 years of marriage with Virginia Lee Meier, until her passing in December 2022.

Born and raised in a farming lifestyle, Richard always had those hardworking qualities instilled in him. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, and honorably served from February 1960 to February 1963. Shortly after enlisting, he and Virginia began their lives together and were married on May 4, 1960. He will be fondly remembered for dedicating over 45 years to R.R. Donnelley before retiring in 2002.

While living in Illinois, he was a longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church and after relocating to Lancaster, became a member of Mt. Calvary Church, where he and Virginia were parishioners for many years. Richard was involved in many activities with the church including being a choir member. He and Virginia also enjoyed square dancing with the Do-Pas-O Club, and bowling. Richard was also an enthusiast of Ford Model T cars and was a member of the Model T Ford International Club, frequently displaying his 1913 Model T, which he owned for over 50 years. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his children, Deborah Lucia and her husband John of Crown Point, IN, and Richard W. Meier, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Elizabethtown; four grandchildren, John and Michael Lucia, Katrina Rhodes and Shaun Meier; and seven great grandchildren, Kimber, Kensley, Kohen, John Michael, Tommy, Colton and Molly. He was preceded in passing by his parents, wife Virginia; a daughter, Sherryl Smith; a grandson, Andrew James Meier, and siblings, Esther, Melvin, and Vernon Meier.

Guests are welcome to a viewing on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, from 6 – 8 PM at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Rd., Lititz, PA 17543, with a viewing from 10 AM until the time of service.

An additional funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the Salem Lutheran Church, 18324 Ashland Ave., Homewood, IL 60430 at 11 AM. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9 – 11 AM. Interment to follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Crete, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Richard’s name may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church at the address above.
