Robert Lowell Amand, 79
May 25, 2024
Robert Lowell Amand, 79, of Lititz, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024 in Lancaster.
He was the husband of the late Joan L. Groff Amand, who passed away in 2010. Born in Lititz, he was the son of the late John H. and Adele Smeltzer Amand.
Lowell had worked as an equipment operator for the PA Turnpike Commission for 15 years, at the Morgantown Maintenance Shed, until his retirement. Prior to this, he worked as a machine operator and machinist for 15 years at Woodstream Corp. in Lititz. Prior to that, he worked at Amand Texaco with his brothers. Lowell served in the US Army and PA National Guard from 1965-1970, reaching the rank of Spec/4.
He loved being active and enjoyed traveling to Tioga County and the PA Grand Canyon area in upstate PA, as well as hunting and competitive long-range rifle tournaments, of which he won several. Lowell was a very talented gunsmith and machinist. He restored and built both vintage and custom optics such as telescopes, binoculars and range-finders. He was a longtime member of the Original Pennsylvania 1,000 Yard Benchrest Club, a long range rifle competition club, and served as range officer for several years. On most days, Lowell could be found dining at the Lititz Family Cupboard, chatting with his many dear friends.
He is survived by his son, Gregory L. married to Shawna Amand of Hamburg, PA and by his siblings: Kathleen “Kitty” Rollman, Dorothy J. Wida, Janet L. Savoca, and Carole L. Miller, all of Lititz. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Clair M., John “Henry”, Nevin “Frank” Amand, and Jean Hollinger.
Graveside services will be private at Hess Mennonite Cemetery, with a public memorial service to be held in the future, for which an announcement will be published.

I met Lowell late in his life, but still, he was enormously generous with his knowledge … and enormously kind with his time. He will be missed by me … and by many you probably have never met. Take care, David Buffington.

Lowell was an awesome friend and neighbor. We shared many good times and shared many memories of the Old Lititz and the way it was. I learned so many things from him he will be greatly missed by his friends “family” at the family cupboard.
