Robert Steven “Bob” Beck, 65

April 20, 2025

Robert Steven “Bob” Beck entered into rest to our Father on 4/20/25 at the age of 65 surrounded by family after a 2 ½ year battle with T cell Lymphoma.

Born in Lancaster, Bob was the son of the late Ammon E. and Shirley J. (Rice) Beck. He was a 1977 graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School

Bob and his wife, Mary Catharine (Anders) Beck, recently celebrated 25 years of marriage. They enjoyed being with family, traveling, and spending time on his favorite toy, his 3700 SCR Maxum cabin cruiser which they kept at Charlestown Marina. Bob also enjoyed hunting, fishing, history, Gettysburg, Lionel O gauge trains, and an occasional cigar with a glass of bourbon. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Bob began his career on the Railroad in 1977 at the age of 18 on Amtrak as a trackman. After 2 years of pounding spikes, he transferred to the Operations Department where he became qualified in various towers namely State, Harris and Cork, eventually getting a regular shift in Lancaster at Cork Tower. From 1990-1999 he worked for Conrail, starting out as a dispatcher and leaving Conrail as a Division Chief Dispatcher. He left Conrail to work for Norfolk Southern in 1999 in Harrisburg as the Harrisburg Division Chief Dispatcher. In 2018, Norfolk Southern transferred Bob and his family to Atlanta, GA where he worked as the Northern Region Superintendent in the Operations Center in Atlanta. He ended his 43-year, career on leap day, 2/29/20 and moved back to Lancaster to be close to family.

He was a loving father to Robert (Jennifer) Beck Jr., Landisville; Billy (Angela) Beck, Bainbridge; Emily Samuel, Lancaster; Eric (Syra) Greider, Manheim; Patrick (Alexa) Greider, Conshohocken and a proud grandfather to Layla, Xavier, Liana, Elijah, Claire, Jackson, Radley, Mraz, Joanna, Benjamin, Jude, and Briggs. He is also survived by his sister, Carol (Beck) Swain, Columbia and was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Beck. Besides his family, Bob leaves behind 4 brother-in-law’s, numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. The family wants to thank the staff at ABBCI especially, Dr. Beer, the Orange Team, the infusion team, and the lab staff; and Masonic Village Hospice staff. They all helped Bob and his family navigate this devasting disease.

Friends will be received by Bob’s family on Friday, April 25, 2025 from 9 – 10AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster, PA, with the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10AM.Luncheon to follow. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in his memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at www.lls.org.

R I P Bob. Way too early, The Good Die Young but you are pain-free. We lost a great Man in you Bob and I’ll never forget you. Thanks for looking over my youngster Mike starting back in 1982 when he was just 7 and would hang out with you guys at the Salunga Fire Company when he was over there. 🤗 You kept a watchful eye on his safety! 🙏🏼

What a great guy Bob was. 🙏🏼 I first met him in 1982 when we moved here beside the Hempfield Fire Department and he and Jody were active members. Our son was 7 and Bob and Jody really took a liking to him. You might say took him under their wing for his safety as he started becoming active. RIP my Friend. 🙏🏼

Bob was a great neighbor and person. I appreciated every conversation we’ve shared. His generosity and willingness to help others, whether with a smile, a thoughtful word, or a helping hand, have left a lasting impact on everyone around him. You will be missed. – James, Pam, and David

Bob was a great guy, and always arrived to work wearing that huge smile he was famous for, and as one of his most inexperienced dispatchers, I was beneficial in giving those “smile muscles” a chance to relax! (Unfortunately, his frown and frustration muscles got a workout!). He had a tough job dealing with egos and attitudes, but he was always ready for a challenge…and I gave him plenty of challenges! (I also gave him that one line above his eyebrows, that showed up during moments of shock and disbelief!) Scientists now call it the “HDW” wrinkle, because it became more prominent when Bob would exclaim …He Did Whaaat??”
But he always returned the next day with that big ole smile, ready to do it again. My guess is, that getting home to Mary, and family times, was the reset he needed to keep that smile. It was ever present, even at the last Dispatchers breakfast he attended, nothing could stop it!
Thank you for the laughs and stories, sorry for the chaos and mayhem, and God bless you for the memories and legacy you left all of us with!

Mary Catherine and all family…I have known Bob for almost 50 years, from JP McCaskey and when we worked at a corner grocery store together. I recently reacquainted at a friend’s funeral last year. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I know he is pain free but so sad. We talked a few times over the last year, his love for his family was obvious. He talked about his boys and all the family. I hope your memories help you all. I am out of state until Sunday so I’ll miss his service, but I know he’ll be honored and remembered well. Rest in peace my friend. Ken Barton Sr

Bobby!!! Way too soon my friend. Way too soon … Thanks for teaching me 95% of what it meant to be a good Chief Dispatcher. More importantly, you were a good man. To his son’s: I want you two to know how much he loved you. He spoke of you often and it was hard for him when you three were not close because he divorced your mother years earlier. I hope you reconciled all things before he passed. Again, he loved you so much. To all who may read this, remember, tomorrow is not guaranteed. Get right with the man upstairs and hug your family every single day. It’s not goodbye Bobby. It’s see you soon!!!

It was always a pleasure to see Bob’s smiling face, no matter what nightmares were going on, when I showed up at work. I’m so sorry that he is gone, but joyful that he is now comfortable in his place in heaven. XOXO ❤️ Maureen Pottinger
