My uncle Rod,
He was a jovial man. Always had a smile.
He was a Christian man, respected the church, volunteering more than anyone can count. St. Mary’s will miss him.
I remember as one of my youngest and fondest Christmas memories, Rod would be Santa… at the welcoming house of my loving Aunt Donna, Charlie, Lori and Chad. Batt Avenue, Willow Street PA. Anticipation of presents and love was a feeling and vision I will never forget. Warm, inviting feeling including a fireplace. We would arrive after service at St. Mary’s. Laukhuff boys, Pap were all there, volunteering. The part of the celebration, the way I remember it. They were common people in that church. The same church my parents many years ago got married in. The same one I think of and miss – my hometown of Lancaster, PA.
I have the luxury of being born on January 4th. After Christmas. After New Year’s. PA weather. Snow usually. Not many family members were able to come. I feel it was a blizzard, but I was 9 or 10 so I can’t remember for sure. It didn’t matter though. Rod made a point to acclaim my birthday, he truly remembered and that meant a lot to me. More than I recognized in Drumore PA in the late 80’s.
I consider myself somewhat of an avid fisherman in this period of my life. There is a reason for that. On several occasions, Charlie, Rod, and Pap (Don) were on the same boat on the Susquehanna River fishing. I was glowing again. A cherished young memory I will never forget.
Gina and I are the same age. We grew up together, but did not experience the same life. You see, I went to Rod as a young lost man out high school, in need of a loan to buy a vehicle. I was broke and so were my parents. I secured a drywall job, as those do in Quarryville PA. He was willing to sign the paperwork. He had faith in me. I was finally going to have a means of transport. He did not waver. For that I am forever grateful. I did not end up buying the vehicle, (which was probably a good thing) but that was not the point. He had faith in me. That is was family is all about.
I live in GA and have been hundreds of miles away for many years. No matter how far, I will never forget my Uncle Rod.
Rodrick E. Laukhuff, is a man that will be missed by many. Not many more than me…
With Love,
Joe Poplar

Gerry and family, I am sorry for your loss with the death of Rod. I can remember like it was yesterday playing football at LCHS with Rod in 1966. He was toughest player and had the most heart of anyone that I played with that year and after. And he was a great guy as well, someone to look up to. I’m sure that God has a place for him in heaven and may God bless all of you.

Dearest Ann, Gina and family, Sending our love and deepest heartfelt condolences for your loss. We shared so many good memories. Not just as neighbors but also chosen family. Michelle, Melinda, and Melissa and I recently reminisced about the times we sat together and watched our girls, as they put on little concerts for us. Praying that your memories carry you all through your grief. Just know that even thouogh time and space have distanced us. Our memories have kept you near in our hearts.
