I met Rod through Bill and Ed Chu. Bill and Ed were opera buffs and loved singing. I sang a little for Rod who was starting to teach voice. Rod said he would teach me twice a week and come to my apartment in Harlem for $15 or lesson. He and Ed would come together and drive from New Jersey.
Rod was very enthusiastic and supportive, and I learned a lot from him. He helped me get a supportive core that made my voice sound louder. But after year I hit a wall and was not able to get through the Passagio – the high notes for a Basso is high D and above.
Rod suggested I study with the great Metropolitan Basso Jerome Hines which I did. But it was Rod who helped me prepare to study with Jerome. I am forever grateful for his kindness, generosity, and support.
