Russell William Stabler, 69
September 24, 2024
Russell William Stabler, 69, passed away on September 24, 2024, at his home in Lancaster, PA. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Christine Stabler; their children and their spouses, Kate (Helyx Horowitz) Stabler and Ben (Annie) Stabler; and his two grandsons, Avi and Sol. He is also survived by his sister, Rita Brown, her daughters, Sarah and Jennifer, and his lifelong best friend, Ken Wagner.
Russell was born in Camden, NJ, to William and Rita Stabler on July 9, 1955. A standout both on and off the track, he became a state champion hurdler and excelled academically, and to what might come as a surprise to all who knew him, he even was a member of the all state boys choir. Through his academic pursuits, Russell became the first in his family to attend college, following his acceptance at the University of Pennsylvania.
He lived and worked in Philadelphia for several years, dreaming of traveling the country and writing the next great American novel. However, after meeting Christine, he realized that there was a greater dream beyond a nomadic lifestyle—one rooted in building a family and connecting with his community. Together they moved to Lancaster, where he continued academic pursuits, commuting to Philadelphia to earn his Juris Doctorate from Villanova University.
Russell practiced law for many years while also dedicating significant time to youth and community development. He served as PTO president for Schaeffer Elementary, President of the Lancaster Day Care Center Board, and as a member of the Manheim Township Superintendent’s Lay Advisory Committee. His commitment to these causes eventually inspired him to pursue a teaching degree from Millersville University.
Family was the cornerstone of Russell’s life. He cherished the moments spent with his loved ones. He shared his love of travel, exploring Europe and the Caribbean, traveling to US state capitals with his family. He was also an avid dog lover, with a special place in his heart for his past pets Molly and Nellie, his childhood dog, Queenie, and his corgi, Tillie.
He had a passion for bringing elaborate ideas and fun experiences to life for his family, whether it was for birthdays, holidays, or special occasions. Halloween was a particular favorite, and the Stabler family went all out, creating grand spectacles that attracted up to 500 trick-or-treaters each year from all across the county.
Russell had a natural ability to make everyone feel welcome, whether in his home or at any gathering. His charm and quick wit could light up a room. More than just a gracious host, he was an exceptional cook, and his holiday meals—especially at Thanksgiving and St. Patrick’s Day—were truly something special. Even when watching rugby with friends, he found opportunities to bring people together. His warm personality made him the heart of every gathering.
A celebration of Russell’s life will take place on October 5, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Russell’s memory may be made to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster.

Condolences to Chris and the Stabler family for the loss of Russ. Thank you Chris for welcoming the rugby guys into your home on Monday evening every few weeks as the guys enjoyed watching a rugby game. As a relatively new guy to the rugby group (~20 years) I feel incredibly grateful for knowing Russ and enjoying our Monday nights watching rugby and sharing stories. Russ was a wealth of knowledge about US sports and always have a fun story to share.
One of my most cherished memories of Russ was our trip together down the Grand Canyon in 2014. It was wonderful for me to share my passion for rocks with Russ. He listened to my geological rambling with grace and patience! Thanks Russ. I will miss you. The rugby guys will miss you!
