Scott Ray Shiffler, 56

April 22, 2018

It is with utmost sadness that I must convey that this world lost a gentle spirit today. Heaven gained an amazing soul, Scott Ray Shiffler, 56, who died this morning, Sunday, April 22nd after a prolonged battle with cancer with his sister and nephew by his side. He fought this disease with encouraging optimism and undying grace.
He was loved by so many. He left us far too soon. Leaving countless, long term friends behind. Scott was generous and kind hearted. Had a spontaneous way of allowing his feelings to be known for those he cared deeply about. As his only sister, from the day of his birth until the day he died we were always devoted to each other. Nearest to the heart even when distance separated us. Scott, don’t forget to meet me in my dreams…
We share the memories of wonderful, fun family times. We were always together when we were young. I remember, trips to the beach, watching the sun rise or set, walking along the water’s edge, collecting seashells and riding bikes in the early morning hours. Scott spent time in Florida as often as he was able with Peg and Bill Bisignani his second, adopted Mom and Dad. He loved the sun and summer was always his favorite season. He loved the outdoors, exercising, planting vegetable and floral gardens and shopping! We whiled away hours playing the dice game, Yahtzee and had so much fun doing it!!
Laughter was a part of his voice always. He looked for the best in everyone and gave each of us something to keep. The simplest things meant something. Scott gave life so much meaning and something more. He will be forever missed and my life will be a little lonelier without him. Scott was always my “little brother” but towered over me by half a foot and though I am older I still looked up to him because it always felt as though he was my protector, inner strength and one of my best friends.
Scott is the son of Ralph H. Shiffler, Lancaster and the late Laretta J. Rudy Shiffler. He is survived by one sister, Deborah York and Partner, Joe Lindquist, Strasburg; a nephew, Jason Pollack, Lampeter, a niece, Stacy York, Lancaster, one great niece, Jaime Pollack, Lancaster and one great nephew, Isaiah York-Gephart, Lancaster. He is also survived by extended family and his two best friends, Brian Bisignani and Kelley Moyer-Schwille.
Scott was born and raised in Lancaster, Pa. and was a graduate of J. P. McCaskey in 1980. He also graduated from Penn State University in Middletown. His first job was at Weis Markets in the produce department. He spent his working career in Men’s Fashions beginning at Wannamaker’s and ending most recently at Macy’s in Harrisburg. He was loved dearly by co-workers and customers alike and was the recipient of many outstanding awards during his working career.
Scott requested that there will be no services. Interment will be at the discretion of the family.
“Raw emotions, overflow into the river of no return. Sadness comes within. It remains. Stays beneath the surface of every moment. Both real and imagined. We grieve the losses that never end. Breathe in. Exhale. Sigh. It will never be the same. Don’t know how to let go of the love. Or the pain.
My heart is broken. If I could I would go with you. Tell you that everything will be lovely. Make sense. Wrap my arms around you, hold on tight. All the way. Fly beyond this universe. Through the brightness of the sun, the darkness illuminated by the moon, rest with you among the stars. Forever. Without end.” ~DY~

Dear, Debra,
I also loved your brother. He was one of my favorite patients–you are right–he was always upbeat and happy–even at his last appointments. He always had a compliment to myself and the staff.  We are so sorry he is gone.  I am sure he is waiting for you in heaven with open arms.  He often spoke of his adoptive family in Florida and how much he enjoyed visiting them. It is so nice to hear a little about his childhood with his big sister.
So sorry, I did not send you my condolences sooner. But my heart-felt condolesences are with you and your family.
Love, Patsi Albright

I will miss you my friend.  You were a bright light and one of the best friends I could have asked for.  You were always about Family, and you loved mine and they loved you.  It’s so hard to believe that you are gone.  The loss is heartbreaking but I am so glad you are no longer suffering.  Rest peacefully Scott knowing so many loved you, so many will feel the void in their lives and that we will all see you again one day.

I was so touched by the loving thoughts expressed in the obituary of this remarkable man. I know his family’s grief is overwhelming. I hope that you all can find comfort in the loving support of each other, in the caring thoughtfulness of your friends, and in your sweet memories. May you also find some comfort in the assurance that “God is near to those who are brokenhearted and crushed in spirit” (Psalms 34:18). May you receive the strength necessary to endure this difficult time. Please accept my sincere condolences. L. Morgans

I knew Scott through a mutual friend.  And I didn’t know him that well.  But the short time I know him I found him to be a kind caring helpful friend to my friend.  Thank u Scott.  Peace be with you.

Thanks to all who took a moment to remember my brother Scott and the rest of us. This loss is one that I still can’t seem to process. I’ve wondered how to live my life without him and I still can’t believe I am never going to see him again. Maybe the utmost pain will ease away one day, but not today…Thank you to all who have touched my brothers life in some way. He would be truly pleased at the outpouring of love both here and on Facebook. God Bless. Deb York

To the family of Scott Shiffler,
My name is Lisa Deisley Olson, Scott and I went to Wheatland Jr. High together. In our 9th grade year we had a Jr. High prom. Scott and I were good friends and decided since neither of us had a companion, we would go together and we did.  We had a wonderful time that night. I lost track of Scott during high school. I was so saddened to hear of Scott’s passing. The world has lost a truly kind, gentle soul. You are in my prayers at this time.
Sincerely,
Lisa Deisley Olson.
