Susan Whiteley Payne, 88

April 28, 2024

Susan Payne passed away on April 28, 2024, at Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy, PA. She was 88. The daughter of Mary and Calvin Whiteley, she grew up in Ruxton, Maryland and was a graduate of The Roland Park Country School. She attended Wheaton College in Massachusetts and graduated from The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill where she was president of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and in the English honors program.

She worked for Black & Decker, where she met her husband, James. His career with Dupont took them to a new location every several years, but fortunately she enjoyed finding interesting houses and meeting new people. In later years, Sue became a Realtor with B. Gary Scott, Inc. in Delaware. After retiring to Sanibel, Florida, she became active in the Congregational Church, editing its newsletter and serving as a deacon. In 2005, Sue and Jim moved to Willow Valley Communities near Lancaster, PA to be closer to their children. It was there that she became a librarian; a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She also loved to travel, play bridge and entertain.

She is survived by Sarah Waterland of Chesterfield, VA; James Payne of Perkinsville, VT; and Betsy Tsukada, husband Thom of Ardmore, PA; eight grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren (and 2 on the way). One grandchild, Calvin Payne, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James, in 2018.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in Sue’s memory to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Willow Street Church, 2723 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA 17584.

A longtime friend, Sue will be dearly missed by my family. Smart, funny, kind, compassionate, and loving, I will always remember the wonderful times and conversations we shared over the years.  Peace and love to her children and family members.  💗

I loved Sue Payne. She was thoughtful, friendly, smart and a strong contributor to our Willow Valley Community. When my husband and I decided to move to WV from CT, she wrote us a three-page letter giving us helpful information about doctors, Lancaster and our WV community. As our Gables’ representative, she was the person who sent out information about meetings, social events, people in our community, suggestions about recyling, etc. We were all connected through her. She was always willing to help anyone if she could.  Her most lasting contribution was the establishment of the library at The Lakes with Susan Bonekemper where she served -along with Susan- as librarian. Sue’s contribution is ever present. We will miss her, but we will never forget her. Anne Schmidt

I was honored to call Sue Payne my dear friend. We loved working together as we ran the Lakes library for  13 years. We enjoyed going to Caruso’s for dinner and taking our own wine in different containers. I will truly miss her great personality and her silly jokes. There will now be more chocolate for me to eat.
