February 20, 1928 - September 07, 2024
Suzanne McNelis passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on September 7, 2024, at The Glen at Willow Valley in Willow Street, PA. Born in Upper Darby, PA, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Catharine (McDonnell) Comly.
Sue shared 61 years of marriage with her husband Joseph F. McNelis, Jr. before his passing in 2012. Together, they founded and operated McNelis Hallmark Shops in Wilmington, DE and grew the business to a successful chain of four stores. Sue loved working in the family business with Joe.
She enjoyed her dogs and going to the beach. Sue was proud of her church.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Sue was predeceased by her brother Dan Comly and sister Kay Huver.
Sue dearly loved her family and is survived by sister Beth Mueller, sons Joseph F. McNelis, III and James McNelis, daughters Suzanne McNelis and Patricia McNelis, granddaughter Dr. Laura Johnson, (Jason), grandsons Patrick (Bridgette), Christopher McNelis (Hilary), and 8 great-grandchildren.
Suzanne was a woman of strength and determination. She went to nursing school in her 50’s and graduated from The Nursing School of Wilmington. She will be well remembered for the many causes held close to heart (to many to list) that she poured her time and energy into.
The family service and interment at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery will be private.
We thank Caring Hospice and the staff at Willow Valley for their comfort and care.

dear family of Sue McNelis, we are so sorry to hear that Sue has left us . but she has gone on to greater glory for sure. Sue and Joe were an integral part of our St. Mary’s prayer group. Joe was so helpful to Marti in her endeavors to establish an authentic Mexican restaurant in Lancaster. I am sorry we wont be able to say goodbye, Sue was a joy to have in our group. Whenever she would light a candle, she would say, “Christ be our light”. it is a beautiful memory. Sue was certainly a light to all who knew her. Rest in Peace gentle soul. on behalf of Marti and Allan, Dave and Kelly, Joanne and Richard, John and Eileen.
