Walter C. Meyer, 81
February 28, 2025
Walter C. Meyer, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on February 28, 2025, at the age of 81 from a hard-fought battle with ALS. Born in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Carl H. and Josephine Meyer.
Walt was a proud graduate, having earned his doctorate at Fordham University, and dedicated his professional life to the field of research chemistry in automotive finishes. He began his career with DuPont de Nemours, Inc. in 1975, where he contributed significantly to the industry until his retirement in 2005. Known for his intellect and pitching, he enjoyed the friendship of many players on the softball team.
Beyond his professional achievements, Walt was a man of several sports. He was an avid racquet sports enthusiast and loved to play pickleball, spending countless hours on the court. Golf was another of his passions and could often be found on the greens several times a week. Walt loved to travel, taking many trips with his wife and family.
Fishing, a passion he embraced from childhood, was one of his great joys. Additionally, his love for competitive and pleasure sailing allowed him to see much of the U.S. eastern shores.
Walt is survived by his loving wife, Karen Meyer, his cherished daughter, Krista Steger (wife of Craig) and grandson, Ben Steger.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Walter’s memory to: ALS Mid-Atlantic, https://alsmidatlantic.org/donation/.

Walt’s impact on the DuPont paint formuator community was monumental. He taught us critical thinking, experiment design and how to use data to lead the organization. If that wasn’t enough, he was fun to be around, in and outside of the lab. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy is living strong.

Dear Karen and family,
We were so sorry to hear the sad news about Walt. He was a dear friend and work colleague in our Troy Research Lab. He made so many valuable contributions to DuPont and our Automotive customers. He was a brilliant, but down to earth polymer chemist. One of a kind!
More recently, we enjoyed seeing and visiting with Walt at our annual Wilmington DPC retiree luncheons. So shocked when we heard why he was unable to attend last December.
We wish you and your family many fond memories and the peace of knowing he is now in God’s loving hands.
Our best wishes,
Dave & Sue Lazzeri

Dear Karen,
Simone & I were so sorry to learn about Walts misfortune and still cannot believe what happened. It is quite remarkable that 35 years after first meeting in Troy we still managed to maintain a great friendship both, workwise as well as with our families – all of that across the atlantic. Walt was a great mentor to me who always had an open ear and a solution to a problem. Spending 4 hours with Walt in a golf cart (or on the skiing slopes) was always a great experience and I will truly miss that and his contageous optimism and quick humor and wit! Karen, we wish you a mountain of strength and you and Walt have been in our thoughts every day since we heard about the diagnosis.
With our deepest sympathy,
Willy, Simone & Marie-Claire.
