Walter T. Mitchell, Jr., 81

Walter T. Mitchell, Jr., 81, of Gordonville, formerly of Long Island, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2024. Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Walter T. and Madeline (Ruff) Mitchell. Walter was the loving husband of Linda K. Mitchell, with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in December. Walter had many hats in life and a few nicknames… Walt, Mitch, Coach, Dibble, Dad, Pop Pop.
Walter served 22 years as a police officer in Suffolk County, Long Island, from the age of 18 until his retirement from the force. He continued to work numerous jobs, eventually moving to Lancaster County. Most recently, he enjoyed helping transport his Amish neighbors/friends. The Esh Family were a second family to him and Linda. Many special memories were made the last 15 years in Gordonville.
Of the Methodist Faith, Walter belonged to the Intercourse United Methodist Church. A great storyteller, he enjoyed sharing his stories with anyone who would lend him an ear. Walter loved spending time with his family and cared greatly for children, whether his own or the children of others. Walter volunteered for the Wantagh Volunteer Fire Co. for 14 years. He coached Little League baseball for many years. He had a passion for animals to include jogging horses at the Roosevelt Raceway in New York. Norton and Trixie were very special dogs in his life. They loved him right back and many others, especially when he brought treats.
In addition to his wife, Linda, Walter is survived by his children: Kim Hill, wife of Michael, of Hamilton, GA and Walter T. Mitchell III, husband of Jacqueline, of Farmingville, NY; 5 grandchildren: Elizabeth, wife of Bobby, Emily, Walter IV, Bridget, and Jack; 3 great-grandchildren: Ruth, Edmond, and Arthur; and sister: Pat Wilcox, of Spring Hill, FL.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at the Intercourse United Methodist Church, 39 Queen Rd., Intercourse, PA 17534. Interment will be held privately, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter’s memory may be made to Special Olympics or Intercourse United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 237, Intercourse, PA 17534.

Linda, So sorry for your loss. Mitch was a great friend of mine even though his worked with my Dad (Guy Thomas Poveromo. Our fondness of horses gave us a lot to talk about. I know you will miss him dearly as will all of this friends. Your are in my thoughts and prayers.

Aunt Linda,Kim and Walter. I’m so very sorry to hear of uncle Walter’s passing. I will always remember uncle Walter ability to tell stories to us especially scarey ones upstate. I have way to many memories of this great man to share on this. But just know my heart goes out to you all. May he rest in peace!
