Wayne Thol McIntosh, 85

Wayne Thol McIntosh, 85, of West Lawn, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly in his home, Sunday December 18, 2016. Loving husband to Marjorie Anne (Moe) McIntosh; they married December 20, 1958 in College Park, Maryland. Wayne, born September 30, 1931 in Jackson, Mississippi, grew up on the reservations of the Piute and Sioux tribes in Nevada and South Dakota, the son of Buell E. McIntosh and Aura (Wolfe) McIntosh who were federal teachers.
Wayne graduated from Bennett County High School in Martin, South Dakota 1949. He was an avid trumpet player and Eagle Scout, graduating from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1953. While a student, he worked at the Purdue Physics Department and enjoyed working as a photographer for campus events and races at the Indianapolis Speedway. After graduation, he worked at DuPont Photo Products in New Jersey as a Chemical Engineer and then at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Co. in Baltimore as a Nuclear Engineer to help design and test nuclear reactors. Later, he worked many years for Lockheed Aircraft Nuclear as a senior nuclear engineer, became a licensed reactor operator, and further worked on design, testing, and operation of nuclear reactors and nuclear instrumentation. He was honored to work with the US State Department in Atoms for Peace exhibits in Austria, Serbia, Spain, Portugal, and Holland. He worked for Lockheed Aircraft as a Senior Aircraft Designer in Georgia and taught at Georgia Tech and Emory Universities. After completing instrumentation research at Emory, he spent 24 years working as a consulting engineer for Gilbert Associates in Reading PA where he did design for nuclear power units in Korea, Pennsylvania, Ohio, South Carolina, Florida among others. He held licenses as a registered engineer in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and California. After retiring from Gilbert in 1984, he worked as a consultant for Nuclear Research Corp. and Canberra to design nuclear instrumentation and radiation monitoring equipment used in many different countries. In the community, he was a leader in the Lion’s Club and Boy Scout Troop 429.
Preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Wayne is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Dr. Glen McIntosh and Alice McIntosh of Boulder, Colorado and his three children, daughter Mary Lynn Morrison and her husband Michael Morrison in Chattanooga, and sons Richard Wayne McIntosh in West Lawn and Dr. Michael Thol McIntosh and his wife Dr. Sumita Bhaduri-McIntosh in Long Island. He dearly loved his nephews, nieces and five grandchildren, Meredyth Alice Morrison, Tessalyn Hope Morrison, David Alexander Morrison, Rohin Ethan McIntosh and Uma Olivia McIntosh.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Music Association or Humane Society in remembrance. A celebration of life will be held at 11AM, Thursday, December 22, 2016, at West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave, Reading, PA 19609.
