William Charles Helman, 92

William Charles Helman, 92, formerly of Millersville, passed away, Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. Bill was born in Manheim to the late Lloyd and Bertha (Burkhart) Helman. He shared 67 years of marriage with his wife Margaret May (Barbour) Helman.
A graduate of Manheim Central High School, he served in the Navy during WWII as an Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class onboard the USS Heywood.
He was an electrician by trade, first working for Harry Gochenaur Electrical Contractor in East Petersburg. He then began a 30+ year career at Franklin & Marshall College, first as an electrician, next as assistant director of the physical plant and Bill retired as the head of maintenance at the Student Center. Bill lastly worked for Manheim Auto Auction for 10 years.
He was a former member of Grace E.C Church, Lancaster, and was currently a member of Bethany E.C. Church. Bill also was a member of Millersville VFW Post 7294, Howell Lodge No. 43 F. & A.M., Lancaster, and was a former member of Kiwanis.
Bill enjoyed deep sea fishing and flying his Taylor Craft Army trainer airplane. A projectionist, he showed films onboard ship in the Navy, at home and at F&M’s Hensel Hall. Bill could often be heard whistling.
In addition to his loving wife Margaret, he is survived by their 4 children: William K. Helman, husband of Patricia, Millersville, Douglas C. Helman, husband of Amy, Millersville, Lori H., wife of Michael McMaster, Wrightsville and John B. Helman, husband of Claudia L., Columbia; 8 grandchildren: Peter Helman, husband of Dr. Tuc To, Charles Helman, husband of Laura, Colin Helman, Curtis Helman, Sean McMaster, Shannon McMaster, Christopher Helman, and Benjamin Helman; and his sister Doris, wife of Harvey Stief. His brother Kenneth Helman predeceased Bill.
A visitation will take place 10 to 11 AM, followed by the funeral at 11 AM with Rev. Dr. Robert L. Haslam officiating, Friday, February 22, 2019 at Bethany E.C. Church, 1165 Letort Rd., Conestoga, PA 17516. Interment with Military Honors will be in Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 4215, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.

Mr. Bill will be greatly missed. We were fortunate to experience his great sense of humor on our visits with him and Miss Marge who was the light of his life and he was quick to remind us of that. His stories and pictures of the Navy were awesome. He was special.

Bill was a caring and friendly man. I knew him from doing business with him. He was always fair and loyal. I have been privaledged to grt to know many of his family members. He loved his family very much. He lived a great life and will be missed by many. RIP sir
